OT Technique Training in DH OT - 2018

OT Technique

Department of Operation Theatre (nursing) has completed 3rd batch of six weeks OT technique training for scrub nurses from OT today. This training was first started in 2016 with the objective of enhancing the knowledge and skills in operation theatre techniques especially in aseptic techniques, role and responsibilities of OT team, positioning, packaging of instruments, care and handling of OT equipment, instruments and supplies and organization of OT. Name of the trainers were Bedana Maharjan, Sumita Shrestha, Asmita Bhuju, Kritika Shrestha, Rabina Prajapati and Sulekha Shrestha.
This year there were 9 participants for the training, among which, 2 nurses were from Nepalgunj medical college, Nepalgunj (Oshin Gupta & Kamala KC), 2 from Siddhi Memorial hospital, Bhaktapur (Renu Shilpakar & Punam Ranjitkar), one from Nepal Police Hospital, Kathmandu (Tulsi Laxmi Acharya), one from Dr Iwamura memorial hospital, Bhaktapur (Srijana Suwal) and three from own institution (Laxmi Shrestha, Sadhana Timilsina & Swostika Timilsina). The course lasted for 6 weeks, which contains one week of theoretical session and rest 5 weeks of clinical practicum in operation theatre. Evaluation of the participant’s performance was performed with some set criteria and examinations such as pretest, posttest, theoretical examination, checklist for different procedures and case study of operative case.
Overall the results were very satisfactory and the participants provided many positive feedback. They found that the clinical practice is done as per the theoretical guidelines in operation theatre, which really is necessary to prevent surgical site infection in operative cases. Participants also appreciated about the good teamwork in OT. Regarding areas for improvement, participants found a bit problem for the access to the main gate of OT and to the canteen due to the digital card system in these areas.
