Workshop on “Hemodialysis Access Site Care and Management of Complications”

Team from Medical College of Wisconsin and Gundersen Health System, USA visited Dhulikhel Hospital on October 2nd 2023 which was led by Dr. Dean Klinger and consisted of Dr. Mustafa Haddad, Dr. Irina Shaknovich, Dr. Alex Halbach, Dr. Santiago Rolon, Dr. Samantha Leonard. The team has been helping with the upliftment of Vascular Surgery services along with research activities at Dhulikhel Hospital and outreach centers. From this year, new collaboration on interventional radiology has been initiated. Department of Surgery with the support of the team along with collaboration with Vascular society of Nepal organized a one day hands on workshop on “Hemo dialysis access site care and management of potential complication.” The workshop focussed on comprehensive teaching of practical aspects of dialysis access care to sixty five participants from eight health centers across Nepal. Dr. Nabin Bahadur Basnet shared on the findings of recently done national level research of hemodialysis access in which 89% of the dialysis is being done via arteriovenous fistula. Dr. Sanjay Sharma, Dr. Swechha Bhatt, Dr. Satish Vaidya, Dr. Robin Karmacharya and distinguished trainers explained the handling of dialysis access in different locally made simulation models. Dr. Uttam Shrestha, Dr. Prem Raj Vaidya, Dr. Florian Thermann, Dr. Sampurna Man Tuladhar, Andrea Poulton, Subhadra Regmi presented on different aspects of dialysis access. The program was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, executive director of Dhulikhel Hospital who highlighted the importace of simulation learning in health sciences.
